ROBERT YOUNG, reeds — Santa Rosa, CA

View set schedule.

Robert Young is a multi-instrumentalist currently playing cornet and sax with Clint Baker’s Café Borrone All-Stars and Earl Scheelar’s Zenith jazz band. His cornet can be heard on the sound tracks for two recent movies by Woody Allen. You can catch him playing bass saxophone with Scott Anthony’s Golden Gate Rhythm Machine. He also plays with Bob Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band. While living in Southern California, he took over the alto-bass position in the Golden Eagle Jazz Band when Paul Woltz left to go to Washington. It was a thrill to play and record with them and their wonderful singer, the late Chris Norris. For 30 years, his career was as a classical pianist, and he is the organist/choirmaster at St. Patrick’s Episcopal church in Kenwood, CA. He owns two classic trucks and lives with his wife in Petaluma, CA.

MIKE LIPSKIN, Harlem stride piano — San Francisco CA

Jazz legend Eubie Blake said: "Mike Lipskin plays Stride bass with perfect accuracy." Leonard Feather of the L.A. Times wrote: "Lipskin, who began studying with Willie 'The Lion' Smith at age 12, displays the virtues of technique, soul, and freshness in his flawless interpretations of Stride pieces." The Newark Star Ledger wrote: "The real spirit of Fats Waller's irreverent singing and spirited piano playing was captured by Mike Lipskin." Harlem-style Stride piano fans travel to San Francisco to hear Mike Lipskin perform. He was the protege of Willie "The Lion" Smith, and learned from Stride masters Luckey Roberts, Cliff Jackson, and the amazing Donald Lambert.

HOT CITY, hot jazz/hot swing/hot rumba – Sac., CA
https://www.facebook.com/hotcityjazzband
An ensemble like no other, HOT CITY has established an aesthetic of New Orleans style hot jazz and classic swing that they augment with a vast array of exotic musical elements, from Latin and Caribbean rhythms to Pacific Island themes and Middle Eastern melodies, forming an intoxicating aural palette that has been referred to as “SWINGXOTICA”. But while they mix and match exotic sounds over a hot swingin’ foundation, whatever they do is done with a passion and zest for their respective instruments. No matter which way one’s individual tastes may lie, anyone who witnesses a HOT CITY performance will experience the undeniable pleasure of hearing musicians who have dedicated their lives to mining this rich musical tradition with not only competence and expression, but with pure joy and enthusiasm.
