Reservations: (916) 961-8006 2008 "Jazz in the Park" Jazz in the Park, an outreach program of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society, is a series of free summer concerts in Sacramento-area parks featuring Sacramento-area bands. The series, presented in cooperation with the City of Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation since 1990, is sponsored jointly by The Golden 1 Credit Union and the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. Special event July 20 at Harlow's Swell Productions of Sacramento, in cooperation with the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, is very proud to present a double shot of hot jazz, swing and lowdown classic blues for one night only with the Sacramento debut of New York city jazz-blues vocalist Catherine Russell AND the worldwide debut of guitar great Little Charlie Baty’s new group, the Little Charlie Caravan. Sunday, July 20 at Harlow’s (2708 J. St., Sacramento, CA), 7 pm. $18 advance, $20 day of show. Tickets are now on sale for the Amador Vintners’ first annual Wine & Jazz Jubilee on Sunday, May 18, 2008. The concerts in Amador, showcasing jazz, swing and blues, will be at: Avio, Bantam Cellars, Deaver Vineyards, Cooper, Karmere, Montevina, Renwood, Sobon Estate and Sutter Ridge. The bands: Cell Block 7, Dr. Bach & the Jazz Practitioners, Catsnjammer Jazz Band, Jazzin' Jacks, Vivian Lee Quintet, Catfish & Crawdaddies, Leo Bootz & the Southside Shuffle, and Gramercy 6 w/ Bob Ringwald. TJYBF: Trad. Jazz Youth Band Fest The 3rd annual TJYBF on Feb.9, 2008 was another success, and plans are underway for next year's youth festival on Sat., Feb. 7, 2009. You can donate to the festival, be a "Clinician Sponsor," advertise your business in the program, or buy a badge for a full day of great music and jazz education. Our 2009 Guest Clinician: tuba player Lee "Westy" Westenhofer. Feb. 26 Concert Fundraiser for TJYBF: To raise money for the Trad. Jazz Youth Band Fest., STJS and Nelmar Construction are presenting a benefit concert, "Long Live JAZZ," on Tues., Feb. 26th, 2008 featuring Ed Polcer's EAST COAST ALL-STARS, in town for one night only. $25 in advance; $35 at-the-door. You may also "Send-a-Student" ($25) selected by you or by STJS. "Patron" tickets are $100 and include preferred seating and a pre-concert reception to meet the musicians. Jan. 26 Crab Feed – STJS Fundraiser The 2nd annual Crab Feed is set for Sat., January 26th, 2008 at the Sky Room at Country Club Lanes (corner of El Camino and Watt Ave.). Entertainment this year features the Vince Bartels/John Cocuzzi Sextet. Tickets on sale now at the STJS Office. Cost of tickets for this worthy fundraiser is $45.00. Doors open at 5:00 pm. Apply for Music Award Students seeking a scholarship award for their music lessons must submit an application by Nov. 20 , 2007. Awards will be presented in December. Funding comes from STJS and from “Jazz Sunday” raffle receipts. Click here to download an application. Any previous recipients need only send in the application plus a short bio updating your progress. NEW Library series this fall: Click here to view and download a flier about a brand new series of jazz concerts, lectures, and films about the history of jazz. Each event is FREE to the public and takes place at the Sac. Central Library (828 I St., Sac.) on Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 6 through Oct. 25. TNT Auditions - Sept. 17 Our STJS-sponsored youth band, TNT, will hold auditions for the positions of drummer, trumpet, trombone, piano, and vocals on September 17th, 2007, at the jazz office starting at 7:00 pm. Gene Berthelsen is new As of July 2007, STJS has a new Executive Director: Gene Berthelsen. We're grateful to have him filling the big shoes left by Jill Harper, to whom we owe so much in terms of getting the STJS back on its financial footing these past several years. Thank you, Jill! STJS election results The STJS membership voted to keep all of our uncumbants: Yvonne Au, Helen Robinson, Bob Ringwald, Jim Roberson, and Bob Sakoi. Our new Secretary is Alicia Fullbright. Since the election, Bob Sakoi has had to withdraw, and so the Board voted to appoint the next runnerup in the election: Vivian Lee. Welcome, new board members, and thank you for your dedicated volunteer service to STJS and Jubilee. STJS Elections on June 10 At the June 10 "Jazz Sunday" meeting, we will hold elections to vote for a few new board members and proposed changes to the STJS Bylaws. PLEASE COME OUT AND VOTE! Our musical guest artist that day will be cornetist Corey Gemme from Los Angeles, CA. TNT new bandmembers Our STJS-sponsored youth band, “TNT” (The New Traditionalists), has many new faces this year. You may have noticed when you saw them performing at the Crab Feed fundraiser in January. The band continues under the direction of Dave Johnson, while STJS volunteer Barb Vagg is the band manager: Katie Greenstein, trumpet; Tristan Bell, clarinet; Michelle Rabowsky, tenor sax; Tyler Woodruff, trombone; Tyler McKinnon, piano; Paul Doerner, banjo; Anthony Swanson, bass; and Jonathan Withem, drums. They performed the opening set at our May 13 “Jazz Sunday” and will also perform at Round Table Pizza in Old Sac (127 K St.) as a pre-Jubilee event on Monday, May 21, 7:00 pm. Two pre-Jubilee concert series Every year, there are several concerts leading up to the Jazz Jubilee in May. Beginning in March and running through April, into May, there is the "Library Series" at Sacramento's Main Library downtown, plus a new series called "Prelude to Jubilee" with concerts at Waterfront Park in Old Sac. All these concerts are FREE to the general public, so go out and enjoy some live music! Please refer to the CALENDAR for exact dates, times, and locations. Or you can download the flyers in PDF format. Swing Dance Exhibition Come and see some dazzling dancing and Lindy Hop at this free exhibition coordinated by the dancers at the weekly Midtown Stomp. The event takes place at the Downtown Plaza's "Piazza Stage," Sat., Mar. 24, 11:30am – 1:30pm. 2007 Music Awards Congratulations to our latest music lesson award winners. CRAB FEED Fundraiser for STJS We had an amazing turnout and made lots of money at the Crab Feed on Sat., Jan. 27th. Thanks to everyone who supported and participated in this event. What a great time! College Musician Award The 1st annual Outstanding College Musician was honored at the 1st annual Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival held at Sac. State on Feb. 11, 2006. Scholarship Founder Laura Lee Humes presented the $1,000 award to Michael Tobian of BYU, who earned it with his impressive trad. jazz performance, dedication to teaching, and perseverance in earning a degree in music. He exemplified the passion for traditional jazz so crucial to “Passing the Torch.” The Kenton O. Smith Trad. Jazz College Scholarship also provides annual funds to a sophomore, junior or senior music major. This award is announced on July 1st. 2006 applications now available through the STJS Foundation. Calling All Youth Musicians: The Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society is looking for eager youth musicians and bands to come to our monthly "Jazz Sunday" concerts at the Dante Club. From noon to 5:00pm on the second Sunday of each month, we offer one room for jam sessions plus two other rooms for listening to great music. (There's dancing, too.) In addition to the club's great food, the Dante is conveniently located right next to McDonalds and Subway. We're also looking for bands to open our party on the Main Stage. Think of it: your band's name on the front page of our monthly AATJ newsletter, as well as in the printed "Jazz Sunday" program. There's a huge audience waiting to cheer you on.
