Bill
Evans is our hero. Having made all but two of the
STJS summer trad jazz camps, he has taken the job
of "facilities co-ordinator" and turned it
into an art-form.
Consider this; 48 hours before camp starts, Bill and
his crew are on site, distributing the various pianos,
drum sets, refrigerators, microphones, PAs, and guitar
and bass amps over the 11 rehearsal/performance sites.
There are water jugs, garbage cans, paper cups, extra
lighting, extra staging and many yards of extension
cords that have to be in place before anyone can play
the first note. Tenting, clothes pins, wind screens,
paper towels, fencing, flats of sodas, bottled water
and the entire contents of two snack bars all have
to be in place by the start of camp.
Bill
Evans started volunteering for the STJS in 1981 and
in 1989 started their first youth
trad band. He
has served as chairman of the STJS education committee,
continues to serve as the assets manager for the
STJS and will continue to be the pillar
that keeps the
STJS Trad jazz camp standing upright.
