Meet the faculty

 

The diverse and eclectic musical talents of BMI award winning trumpeter, composer Rusty Stiers have joined with such artists as Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Bob Hope, Julie Andrews, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, George Michael, Clint Black, Don Henley, Ronnie Spector, Connie Francis, Judy Collins, The Beach Boys, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Pat Boone and Tommy Tune.

His jazz credits include performances with Charlie Ventura, Tex Beneke, Pepper Adams, Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, Louis Belson, Jack Sheldon, Tommy Newsome and Tom Kubis.

Born March 12,1959 in Eugene Oregon, Rusty was introduced to music at the age of 7 by his musical family. His studies began on the piano but quickly reoriented to the trumpet with interests leaning toward jazz and composition.

1978 found Rusty at the end of an American tour, which included shows at the White House for President Jimmy Carter and The Kennedy Center For The Performing Arts. Recruited by Disneyland as a band Leader, he spent the next 6 years at the park at which time he was musical director for 5 consecutive character shows.

Between 1984 and 1987, Rusty developed his career as a free lance Composer - Conductor working for such diverse clients as New Generation Pictures, Nisei Week Coronation Ball, Holland America Cruise Lines, the Long Beach Grand Prix and The Long Beach Symphony.

In 1985, Rusty began his work in Jazz education by accepting a faculty position at The Sacramento Jazz Camp, in 1989 at Fullerton College and in 1997 he was appointed to the faculty of the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Camp.

After completing his studies in Conducting and Film Scoring at UCLA, Rusty scored many films, commercials, documentaries, TV pilots and cartoons. His concert works include 13 Bed Time Stories for Orchestra, The Beiderbecke Requiem Concerto and The Pengra Symphony. Rusty is currently a full time staff musician at Disneyland in Anaheim California where he leads his band The River Rascals

Rusty is the only instructor that has taught at every STJS summer jazz camp and was a featured guest artist at the 2005 Sacramento Jubilee.
