STJS Foundation "Jazz Education Award"

PERIODICALLY, the STJSF will honor:
1) Jazz musicians and music educators who have a long, consistent record of providing traditional jazz education, and
2) STJS members who have demonstrated a history of consistent support for jazz education activities.

AWARDS TO DATE:

2012: Music educator and band director Celia Cottle
of J Street Studios — our inaugural winner of the JEA.

2014: Music educator and band director Felicia Weatherly
of River City High School.

MUSIC LESSON AWARDS (est. 1979):
STJS provides funding for private music instruction for local elementary, middle school and high school students. Naturally, the emphasis is on traditional jazz. Scholarship money has traditionally been raised by the STJS Foundation, and through the monthly raffle held during the Jazz Sunday concert. If you are a young musician interested in studying traditional jazz, you can contact the STJS Office for information about applying for one of these annual Music Lesson Awards. MLA Application.

GUEST ARTIST MENTOR PROGRAM (est. 2008):
High school jazz band students are invited to sign up to jam with selected Jazz Sunday guest artists during the noon Mentor Set in the Gold Card Room under the supervision of the Gold Card Room Music Coordinator. Not all guest artists participate in mentoring. More info about Jazz Sunday at: sacjazz.org/sunday.html

PARTNERSHIP with SJUSD
(San Juan Unified School District)(est. 2008):

The STJS Jazz Education Committee is represented on the SJUSD Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Advisory Committee, which meets monthly throughout the school year. This new relationship, dubbed the “Jazz Club,” provides a direct and updated communication pipeline with not only the district’s classroom music specialists, band directors and choir teachers, but also with the entire district community via their events, newspapers, online newsletters, electronic updates, and website calendars.

TRAD. JAZZ BOOT CAMP (est. 2008):
This class provides professional development and CEUs (continuing education units) for teachers who desire a flexible combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience with all-star musicians. The emphasis is on teaching improvisation and directing a student jazz combo. This continuing education program is currently being piloted for the 2008-2009 academic year with San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD). For more info: Craig Faniani, Curriculum Coordinator for Visual and Performing Arts in SJUSD, at [email protected] or Bill Dendle, STJS Trad. Jazz Camp Director, at [email protected]

SACRAMENTO MUSIC FESTIVAL & JUBILEE, formerly the DIXIELAND JAZZ JUBILEE (est. 1974):
The Sacramento Music Festival is one of the world's largest festivals that still features traditional jazz, annually attracting about 70,000 people to Downtown Sacramento and Old Sac, to hear a showcase of bands, including youth bands, during Memorial Day Weekend (end of May). As of 2012, children age 12 and younger are admitted free, while youth (age 13-21) receive a discounted ticket rate. There is no charge for admission to designated Next Generation (youth band) sites in Old Sacramento. STJS offers discounted group rates for school field trips. For group rates, contact the STJS Office. A selected festival band hosts Open Jam Sessions for all ages at Round Table Pizza in Old Sacramento, Friday through Sunday evenings. For practical education in stage performance, gifted young musicians perform (sit-in) with an adult band at the festival. For more festival info, visit: http://sacmusicfest.com or contact STJS.

TJYBF – Trad. Jazz Youth Band Fest. (est. 2006): STJS created the first traditional jazz festival for student jazz combos. It was a huge success, and so continues each year in early February. This non-competitive scholastic festival is co-presented with Sac. State Jazz Studies under the direction of Dr. Steve Roach. Approximately $4,000 in merit awards and scholarships are offered. The registration fee includes: sectionals, ensemble clinics, all-star faculty instruction, adjudicated performances, (optional) Friday evening jam session with clinicians, and admission to Jazz Sunday (the STJS monthly gathering). Festival tickets include the Evening Showcase concert featuring the all-star Clinicians Band. For more info: sacjazzfoundation.org/tjybf// or write to [email protected]

TRAD. JAZZ CAMP –
Youth (est. 1985) and Adult (est. 2000):

This week-long summer camp in late July/early August provides intensive jazz combo instruction for approximately 100 young musicians, ages 12-18. For certain instruments, scholarships are available to the youth camp. Camp was expanded in 2000 to provide an additional week-long education for approximately 90 adults. Located amid cedar and pine trees (in the Sierra foothills, about 64 mi. east of Sacramento, CA), the camp is held at the Sly Park Environmental Education Center. Camp faculty consists of some of the finest trad. jazz musicians in the country. Apply by April 1st each year. For more info, go to: www.sacjazzcamp.org or write to [email protected]

TRAD. CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS:
The STJS Foundation, along with other jazz clubs, funds scholarships for the STJS Trad. Jazz Camp for youth (on selected instruments). Camp applicants may contact Camp Director Bill Dendle or their local jazz club for a scholarship application (if the club offers scholarships, which many do). The STJS Raffle also funds a scholarship for college students to attend the Trad. Jazz Camp for Adults. These recipients are selected in February at the TJYBF (Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival) from among the participating bands.

TNT – The New Traditionalists (est. 1989):
This STJS-sponsored honor band for select high school jazz band students in the Sacramento region is formed each year by audition at the start of the school year. Students are under the direction of a professional musician and attend weekly rehearsals in Sacramento. TNT represents the STJS at several events throughout the year: the Sac. Music Festival, the Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival, community events, trad jazz festivals, and Jazz Sundays. For info, contact STJS. Any high school student that plays a jazz instrument is eligible.
Quick Reference List regarding TNT auditions:
•   Students will be asked to:
    sight-read, play scales, play a 12-bar blues
•   Students MUST complete and bring a
TNT Student Application to their audition
•   The band rehearsal day/time will be arranged by the
selected members for each year's TNT band.

JAZZ SUNDAY CONCERTS (est. 1968):
Join us on the 2nd Sunday of each month. We encourage jazz fans, swing dancers, and music students to attend. Each monthly concert is like a mini Jazz Jubilee. We hire a special guest artist or well-known band to entertain our members as they gather to socialize, dance, or just hang out and listen to some great LIVE music. You'll find three rooms playing live music simultaneously! Our featured guest musicians perform on the Main Stage, our "Gold Card Musicians" play in the Gold Card Room, and then there are the jam sessions (for any and all musicians) that take place in the Tailgate Room. (Five sets x 3 rooms = a lotta’ music!) Doors open at 11:30 am, music starts at noon and continues till 5 pm. Food & beverages are available for purchase. Full bar service. STJS members and students (age 12-20) receive a discount admission. Kids under 12 get in free! For current pricing and info, visit sacjazz.org/sunday.html.

YOUTH BANDS FEATURED MONTHLY (est. 2004):
Local school bands are invited and regularly featured at our monthly Jazz Sunday concerts (every 2nd Sunday unless it's Easter). The first set at noon on the Main Stage is devoted to our young, developing musicians. Students take this opportunity to perform before a live audience that is there to praise and encourage those musicians who will carry trad. jazz into the future!

ORGANIZED JAM SESSIONS:
Youth musicians (under 21) and members get in free to Jazz Sunday when they bring their instruments and register at the Musicians’ Registration table in the front lobby Admissions Table. (Sudents' parents/chaperones pay the membership rate.) To play in a jam session, musicians must also sign-in with the Tailgate Room Coordinator. Musicians will then be assigned to a jam set based on their playing experience. They may be paired up with an experienced Gold Card musician to guide them along in their set, or be invited to participate in a special mentor set.

TAILGATE MUSICIAN CARD
(Back due to Popular Demand!):

After playing three times (at 3 different Jazz Sundays) in the Tailgate Room, a musician who then becomes an STJS member is eligible to receive a Tailgate Card issued by the Tailgate Room Coordinator. Tailgate Cardholders will receive free admission for themselves plus one guest when they sign-in to play at a Jazz Sunday.

STJS "FAKE BOOKS":
STJS provides binders with lead sheets to 100 traditional jazz tunes. For beginning musicians learning to transpose, the binders also come in various keys. They are available in the Tailgate Room.

DRUM SET DONATIONS:
As STJS rotates-out used drum sets each year, they are donated to benefit Sacramento State University, Sacramento City Schools, San Juan Unified School District, Washington Unified, Woodland Unified, and Dry Creek Joint Elementary School Districts.

"JAZZ IN THE PARK” Free Concerts (est. 1990):
[AS FUNDING ALLOWS EACH YEAR] An outreach program of the STJS, this is a series of free summer concerts in Sacramento-area parks featuring Sacramento-area bands. It is presented in cooperation with the City of Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation and the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. The series typically includes nine concerts, all on Sunday evenings from 6–8 pm, running June 1 through mid-August.
The Jazz Education Committee is seeking new volunteers to take over the accompanying MUSICAL PETTING ZOO that introduces kids to musical instruments at these park concerts. Check the STJS website calendar for concert dates and locations: sacjazz.org/calendar.html

STJS MEMBERSHIP:
Membership entitles you to: an informative monthly newsletter ("And All That Jazz"), approximately a 15% discount on all Jubilee badges, and a 30% discount to monthly Jazz Sunday concerts. For current rates and membership types, visit sacjazz.org/membership.html

JAZZ EDUCATION COMMITTEE:
The Jazz Education Committee, appointed by the STJS president, includes school band directors and music coordinators from the surrounding school districts. They oversee all youth programs and Music Lesson Awards.

If you'd like more information about any of these STJS programs, please contact the STJS Jazz Education Committee Chairperson via the STJS Office.
