The Kenton O. Smith Traditional Jazz College Scholarship

Qualifications

  1. Applicants must be under the age of 25, with a declared major in music at an accredited college, conservatory or recognized school of music in the United States.
  2. Applicants must show interest and experience in traditional jazz with competency in the traditional instruments of that music. Preference will be given to clarinetists, then saxophonists, in the event that applicant are judged to be equally qualified.
  3. Recipients may reapply for subsequent year awards.
  4. Applicants will be considered on the basis of their musical ability, experience and competency in traditional jazz music as well as financial need upon applicaton.

How to Apply

Complete the application and attach the following:
  1. An essay detailing your interest and experience in traditional jazz music.
  2. A video, CD, or cassette recording of your performance of three songs of your choice. A personal statement of authentication of the submitted performance should be included.
  3. Two letters of recommendation from knowledgeable individuals regarding your musical ability, potential, and level of interest in traditional jazz music.
  4. An explanation of financial need.
  5. List any awards received for jazz.
  6. submit completed application and attachments by May 1 to:

Awarding of Scholarship

The Recipient(s) will be notified July 1. The award will be transmitted to recipients upon verification of college status.
