He got his start in music as a composer and arranger for various Brazilian artists in the 1950s, including singer Joao Gilberto. In the early 1960s, he began collaborating with American jazz musicians, including saxophonist Stan Getz, and helped to popularize the bossa nova style of music in the United States. Jobim’s compositions, such as “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Corcovado,” became jazz standards and he is considered one of the most important figures in Brazilian music history. He continued to perform and record until his death on December 8, 1994 at the age of 67.
